WPC laboratory:
the evolution of composite wood

Woodn Greenwood's WPC composite wood overcomes the limits of natural wood to inspire the increasingly innovative construction industry with a lower impact on the environment.
Two revolutionary formulas, resulting from 20yrs of experience and the high specialization of our R&D dpt, which combine two different types of recyclable polymers and coniferous wood FSC® certified, all of Italian origin and obtained from scraps of other processes.
Thus, a new, advanced and durable material comes to life, capable of offering highly functional technical performances and fighting against the deforestation of the planet.
It is a lightweight, but resistant material, with a refined and elegant touch and feel. The right balance between wood and polymer, which is the base of the products, makes them highly resistant to moisture, to the attack of fungi and termites, to atmospheric agents, therefore they can be used in any climatic condition and at all latitudes, even in marine environments.
Exposure to UV rays does not alter the color, which remains stable over time without requiring special treatments.
Woodn and Greenwood, given their different nature deriving from their composition, are different in colors and chromatic tones, but they can be perfectly combined to allow the maximum customization for the designer.

WOODN WPC composite wood

Made with recyclable PVC polymers

WPC WOODN is an original composite wood, a unique species on the international scene.

The compound is composed of a predominant part of PVC, a thermoplastic polymer that protects surfaces and is the only one that can be classified for fire resistance. The result is a lightweight and renewable technical material for customized profiles.
THE ADVANTAGES OF PVC IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

1_It is versatile and lends itself to a wide range of applications.
2_It is waterproof and 100% recyclable
3_Thanks to its composition and mechanical properties, PVC is the most suitable polymer for outdoor applications, exposed to UV rays or atmospheric agents.
4_It is safe and inert, fire resistant, virtually non-flammable, self-extinguishing and does not contribute to the flame spread.

GREENWOOD WPC

Made of 60% wood fiber

WPC GREENWOOD is a technical wood with a complementary concept to WPC Woodn.

In fact, it is made up of 60% wood powder and 40% plastic, i.e. Polypropylene. This particular polymer component guarantees certified performance in terms of dimensional and chromatic stability, making it the ideal material for decking applications. The higher percentage of conifer wood fiber, on the other hand, enhances the surface grain, making the touch & feel perception of the boards closer to real wood.

THE PRODUCTION OF OUR WPC

The key factors in the production of composite wood are essentially 3:

1.RESEARCH, SELECTION AND PROCUREMENT OF RAW MATERIALS
: the R&D department selects all the raw materials used during the production process such as polymers, wood fibers and in particular additives from Italian and European suppliers. This is a process in constant improvement and represents the first step that will lead to the manufacturing of products that will be installed all over the world and in any kind of climatic condition.
2. FULL CONTROL OF THE FORMULATION
: as specialized manufacturers of this material, we create internally our own formulas, which we know the limits and potential of. This allows us to provide multi-year warranties on all our systems, to guarantee safety and durability of the finished product.
3.EXPERIENCE AND SPECIALIZATION IN EXTRUSION
: we internally control all extrusion phases and parameters.
Once the selection of raw materials and the formula has been tested and approved, there are several factors that are involved in the actual production process:
a. Compounding and measurement of the level of humidity of the material
b. The homogeneous combination of all components and additives
c. The temperature and melting dynamics of polymers
d. Profile calibration and continuous control of physical, mechanical and aesthetic parameters
e. Extrusion speed and output f. the final cut to length

THE EXTRUSION PROCESS

Industrial extrusion through more than 50 different dies and 9 dedicated lines powered by a photovoltaic field. A closed cooling circuit that recycles water.

    TESTS AND RELIABILITY

Woodn Greenwood systems, beside contributing to the LEED® classification of buildings, are periodically subject to testing processes in accredited laboratories, to guarantee designers and builders the declared performance and sustainability.

    Available in the technical documentation:
    • Fire resistance tests, according to Italian and US regulations (ASTM E-84, NFPA 285, NFPA 268)
    • Humidity resistance test and control of mechanical properties.
    • Slip resistance test (DIN and AS)
    • VOC emission test
    • Sound absorption test (ASTM C423)
    • Termite resistance test (ASTM D3345-22)

    FAQs

    We answer your questions

WPC stands for Wood Plastic Composite, a composite material formed from wood powders, plastic polymers and additives. A material originated in the early 1970s in the automotive industry, but because of its extraordinary properties it soon established itself as an environmentally friendly and durable alternative to natural wood applied to construction.

Woodn Greenwood’s WPC laboratory has developed 2 original formulas for its products: the WPC WOODN has a preponderant polymeric part and is intended for exterior cladding, ceilngs, and sunshades; on the other hand, the WPC GREENWOOD, which contains about 60 percent softwood dust, is designed for floor applications, walkways, and poolside areas.

All the wood powders we used in our formulas are FCP®-certified.

WPC is self-extinguishing, fire and weather resistant. The wood-polymer compound does not need protective coating, does not crack or splinter, is woodworm and mildew resistant, and comes in custom lengths.

Even for outdoor applications, WPC requires no treatment or protective coating because the polymer component makes the material waterproof and long-lasting.

Our WPC products require minimal maintenance. After the first application, cleaning with high-pressure water under 80 bar is sufficient. The aesthetic performance doesn’t fade over time. In any case, a brief maintenance and handling manual for the slats is available in the Technical Area.

WPC is a 100% recyclable material. Since the Woodn Greenwood production cycle is completely in-site, we trasform any production waste into new raw material to be reused in subsequent extrusion processes.
