WPC Laboratory
the evolution of composite wood

Woodn Greenwood's WPC composite woods surpass the limitations of natural wood to inspire increasingly innovative and less environmentally impactful construction.

Two revolutionary formulas, the result of twenty years of experience and the high specialization of our Research & Development departments, which dose two different types of recyclable polymers and conifer wood flour with FSC certification®, all of Italian origin and obtained from waste from other processes. This is how it comes to life a new advanced and durable material, capable of offering high-performance technical features to the construction industry while combating deforestation on the planet.

WPC is a lightweight yet durable material with a refined and elegant appearance. The right balance between wood and polymer that forms the basis of the products makes them highly resistant to water, fungi, pests, and atmospheric agents, therefore they are usable in any climatic condition and at all latitudes, even in a marine environment. UV exposure does not alter the color, which remains stable over time without requiring surface treatments.

Wood and Greenwood, given their different natures stemming from their composition, differ in colors and chromatic rendering, but they can be perfectly combined to allow the ultimate customization for the designer.

WPC Woodn

Based on recyclable PVC polymers

WPC WOODN is an original composite wood, a unique species in the international landscape.

The mixture is composed of a predominant part of PVC, a thermoplastic polymer that protects surfaces and is the only one classifiable for fire resistance. The result is A lightweight, renewable, and moldable technical material for custom profiles.

THE ADVANTAGES OF PVC IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

1_ It's versatile and lends itself to a wide range of applications.

2_ It is liquid-proof and 100% recyclable.

3_ Thanks to its composition and mechanical properties, PVC is the most suitable polymer for outdoor applications exposed to UV rays or atmospheric agents.

4_ It is safe and inert, fire-resistant, virtually non-flammable, self-extinguishing, and does not contribute to flame propagation.

WPC Greenwood

Designed for decking

WPC GREENWOOD is a technical wood with a concept complementary to WPC Woodn.

In fact, it is composed of 60% wood powder and 40% plastic, specifically polypropylene. This particular polymer component guarantees certified performance in terms of dimensional and color stability, making it the material ideal for floor applications. The higher percentage of conifer fiber, on the other hand, enhances the grain in the paste, making the touch & feel perception of the slats closer to that of wood.

OUR WPC PROCESSING

Woodn Greenwood designs and manufactures both the “raw material”—WPC—and the profiles in-house using an extrusion process. The on-site 100% production cycle allows for complete design customization and enables the company to transform all waste into new raw material.

The key factors in composite wood production are essentially 3:

1_ RESEARCH, SELECTION, AND PROCUREMENT OF RAW MATERIALS: The R&D department selects all raw materials used in the production process, such as polymers, wood fibers, and especially additives, from Italian and European suppliers. This is a process that is constantly improving, from which all products that will be installed worldwide under any climatic condition will take shape.

2_ FULL CONTROL OF THE FORMULATION: As manufacturers specializing in the production of this material, we develop our own formulas internally, understanding their limitations and potential. This allows us to provide multi-year warranties on all our systems, ensuring the safety and long-term durability of the finished product.

3_ EXPERIENCE AND SPECIALIZATION IN EXTRUSION: We internally check all stages and parameters of extrusion.

Once the selection of raw materials and the formula have been tested and approved, several factors are involved in the actual production process:

• Granulation and moisture content measurement of the material.
• Homogeneous coupling of all components and additives.
• The temperature and melting dynamics of polymers.
• Profile calibration and continuous monitoring of physical, mechanical, and aesthetic parameters.
• Extrusion speed and output.
• The custom in-line cut.

EXTRUSION PROCESS

WPC stands for Wood Plastic Composite, a composite material made from wood flour, plastic polymers, and additives. This material was first developed in the early 1970s in the automotive industry, but thanks to its extraordinary properties, it quickly established itself as an eco-friendly and durable alternative to more traditional building materials.

The in-house WPC laboratory at Woodn Greenwood has developed two formulas for its products: WOODN WPC, which has a high polymer content, is intended for exterior cladding, suspended ceilings, and sunshades; WPC GREENWOOD, which contains approximately 60% of coniferous wood flour, is designed for flooring, walkways, and poolside areas.

WPC is more durable and stable—both aesthetically and structurally—than natural wood. It retains its color even over the long term. The material is fire-resistant and self-extinguishing in the event of a fire, and resistant to pests. WPC surfaces are slip-resistant and water-repellent; the planks do not crack or splinter. Furthermore, WPC requires minimal maintenance.

Even for outdoor applications, WPC does not require any protective treatment or coating, because the polymer component makes the material waterproof and durable.

WPC requires minimal maintenance, especially when compared to natural wood. After the initial installation, cleaning with high-pressure water below 80 bar is sufficient. The aesthetic appeal remains unchanged over time. In any case, in the’Technical Area A brief manual for the maintenance and handling of the slats is available.

WPC is a recyclable 100% material. In the case of Woodn Greenwood in particular, since the production cycle is completely on-site, every production scrap is transformed by us into new raw material, to be reused in subsequent extrusion processes.
